Our mission is to educate, celebrate, challenge, and inspire Noblesville to be a welcoming and inclusive community that embraces all cultures and identities.
Building a welcoming and inclusive community is not an event with a beginning and an end. It is a practice that continuously evolves and advances. Our values guide our behaviors, inform our decisions, and strengthen our partnerships.
-
We recognize and value the unique experiences, traditions, contributions, and dignity of everyone.
We pursue a better way of relating and being with each other. Words and behavior matter; we speak and
act with care and own our intent and impact. We honor all the ways we are different from each other,
including our values, beliefs, behaviors, and choices. Empathy, curiosity, and understanding are all
facets of respect and are especially important in areas of disagreement. One of the best and most beautiful
things about humanity is that we're all different from one another.
Core Values
-
We can't do this work alone. We actively seek opportunities to work in true partnership with others to
think bigger and differently about what is possible.
Cultivating and nurturing a welcoming and inclusive community requires a community-wide, shared
commitment. We constructively explore collaboration opportunities with like-minded organizations,
groups, and individuals. Collaboration is not just about coordinating the work. It refers to specific ways
of relating to each other and working together. It involves investing in each other as equal process
owners and sharing responsibility, accountability, and credit for outcomes.
-
We are always in the process of learning and growing and seek to listen and learn from others.
Building a welcoming and inclusive community begins with our individual journey of examination and
discovery. We put ourselves in unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations and honestly examine what we
see and experience. We acknowledge the limits of our knowledge and the possibility of being
wrong. We examine our assumptions, motives, and behaviors from a posture of self-critique rather than
self-defense. We openly share our missteps, vulnerabilities, and growth.
-
Our work radiates from the belief in the possibility and necessity for change and the resolve to make it
happen.
We lead by example. We dig deep into the issues of race, class, and social differences and listen to others
with a willingness to be changed by what we hear, knowing that as we take that posture, it will help others
do the same. We know incremental and substantial action is needed. There are no easy answers or
perfect solutions. Courage is being the first to risk and the last to leave.
How Noblesville Diversity Coalition Began
In February 2018, a group of Noblesville residents, leaders in the faith and business communities, and organizations came together to form the Noblesville Diversity Coalition (NDC) to build a more welcoming and inclusive Noblesville.
Racial tension and threats of violence nationally and locally exposed a problem that called for action. Noblesville Community School’s Superintendent, Dr. Beth Niedermeyer, invited representatives from the community, the Mayor’s office, local businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, faith-based organizations, parents, educators, and students to a community meeting. It became evident, that Noblesville needed a collaborative community-wide approach to identify and address underlying issues contributing to bias, discrimination, and intolerance that lead to widening divides–racial, political, religious, economic, and more. NDC became a voice for change across all community sectors.
NDC focuses on education, learning, and engagement at the individual and community levels. During its first year, NDC hosted a series of events to spark community conversations about various topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In just two years, hundreds of residents have joined NDC to increase their awareness, understanding, and engagement in various ways to make Noblesville a more welcoming and inclusive community.
In November 2019, NDC received its 501(c)3 nonprofit status.
